"¡"I am the Lion of Jiang Nan! Make way!" ."
- Gan Ning of the Bells
Name:Gang Ning. "Gan of the Bells" (opt.)
Age: 28
Gender: Male
Style: Canon
Personality:
Utterly arrogant and completely reckless, Gan Ning is a man of the moment. Head strong and impulsive as only a youth can be the pirate enjoys being the centre of attention. Indeed he so enjoys attention, be it good or bad that he has adopted a rough, impolite way of speaking, constantly swaggers in the most eye catching way possible, gels his red hair into bright spikes using lime and wears brightly coloured clothes with bells sewn into the outfit.
Needless to say Gan will talk back if insulted, and if pushed will draw his sword on anyone, be they peasant or king. Gan Ning is so proud of his victories he ties trophies of them onto his hair and clothes, so naturally he makes quite a racket moving about.
Morally Gan Ning is a murderous, robbing, looting savage with no respect for the chain of command and a complete disregard for authority. He views himself as above the law and mockingly wears bones of animals and people on his body. Though Gan is also open minded, and brave with a love of scholars writings and tactics. Later, he becomes a chivelrous officer who intimidates even the legendery Gaun Yu where, at a place today called " Gaun Yu's Swallow" he rode out with a mere thousand men to challange the general, who was leading thirty thousand. Gaun Yu point blank refused the challange and was forced to go around the murderous pirate.
Despite this Gan is loyal both to the men under his command and to anyone who earns his friendship. He is brave, reckless and when it comes to friends extremely protective, though his harsh speech and rough attitude tend to make it hard for people to befriend him.
Weapon(s):
Gan Ning being a pirate wanted a weapon that could be used on ships but also offered a certian intimidating factor, and while certian texts describe him as wielding two pole arms at once ( Which anyone with any experince in any form of pole arm fencing will tell you is near impossible and probably artistic lisence) it is more likely that he wielded a Dao blade.
A doa is a broad bladed Chinese sabre with a curved, thick blade. The weapon is blade heavy and suited to dynmatic sweeping strikes and powerful slashing parries. Being blade heavy it is also suitable for horseback, though Gan Ning probably wielded it because it was a 'big mans' weapon and had a nasty reputation in ancient china for being able to severe limbs and cause horrific damage.
Unlike the later Shaolin monks style of wielding the weapon Gan Ning would probably have used the weapon as an extension of his brawling techniques, making thick, deep sweeping cuts with it. His technique would involve cutting his way past the other mans pole arm, and then hacking around himself untill everything around him lay dead and dying.
Gan Ning also has a straight bladed knife which he used whe nthe battle was too close for sword strokes, such as on a ships deck. He would have used the blade in one hand, grabbing wit hthe other and using the weapon th open up weak points, or jab at exposed areas of an armoured opponent.
History:
Gan Ning was born in Linjiang and from an early age was considered a trouble maker, a theif and a bully, he often picked on the childern of the local lord while absurdly protecting children from peasant families. His household could be considered abusive even by the standards of the time and when he was thirteen Gan gathered up a posse of local idle youths and led them from the city with nothing but mock weapons and an ideal.
Here Gan vanishes breifly from history only to reappear as the terrifying Gan Ning of the Bells. A bandit warlord who, along with his men wore bells and bright, gaudy colours. Gan Ning was already an infamous killer, scarred and arrogant. He took with him a silk carriage filled with concubines and often went to sea in a light galley raiding fishing and trading boats. Whenever the peasantry heard the bells ringing they would flee in terror and in this way Gan Ning could be considered one of the fathers of psychological warfare.
Gan is however looking for a new master to serve and has already been rejected twice on the grounds of his past, so he and the handful of bandits under his command continue to plauge the lands of Wu while Gan Ning tries to settle his violent heart on a lord to serve.
