History:
Jiang Wei was born during the late Han Dynasty and was from Tianshui Commandery in Gansu. His father Jiang Jiong was a military officer who was killed in battle during a Qiang rebellion, early in Jiang Wei's life. Because of what happened to his father, Jiang Wei became a military officer himself for the state of Cao Wei.
Zhuge Liang one day was assigned to invade Tian Shui. Ma Zun, his commander, ordered Jiang Wei to accompany Xiahou Mao and Liang Xu to defend the castle at Tian Shui. Zhuge Liang nearly succeeded in defecting Jiang Wei to Shu, but Jiang Wei held back, as he had a promise to keep to his lord, Cao Pi and his oath with Ma Zun and Xiahou Mao.
Although historically he was left behind by the other Wei officers during this battle and never had an oath with Ma Zun or Xiahou Mao, he was let back into safety with the others and continued to serve Wei. For the sakes of his mother, Jiang Wei assisted in moving her to Ye in the province of Hebei. He assisted Ma Zun in defeating Zhuge Liang's second assault, where Zhuge Liang pulled back. After looking at this marvelous achievement, Ma Zun promoted his sworn brother to General of the area.
